The girl's parents were killed in an accident, Uncle Lord Asriel is her only known living relative and protector and brought the girl to college as a baby. One day, the mysterious Marisa Coulter (Ruth Wilson) appears. Fascinated by the glamorous lady, Lyra accepts her invitation to London. Once there, Coulter gradually exposes her perilous sides: she appears to be involved in the mysterious disappearance of many Oxford children, which seem to be linked to an unexplored substance called "dust." The search for a kidnapped friend leads Lyra further and further north, where she meets armored bears and witch clans. As she tracks down the dangerous threat, the fate of all worlds lies in her hands.
"His Dark Materials" is based on the eponymous novel trilogy by Philip Pullman. Published in German under the titles "The Golden Compass", "The Magic Knife" and "The Amber Telescope", it has been translated into over 40 languages and sold almost 18 million copies worldwide. The TV and theater star Jack Thorne ("The Last Panthers", "Harry Potter and the enchanted child") makes the novel a spectacular and multi-layered fantasy world with plenty of room for nuances. Directed by Oscar winner Tom Hooper ("The King's Speech"), starring alongside "X-Men" star James McAvoy and "Logan – The Wolverine" discovery, Dafne Keen also stars Ruth Wilson ("The Affair"), Lin -Manuel Miranda (Tony Award winner for the musical "Hamilton") and Clarke Peters ("The Wire", "Treme"). "His Dark Materials" is a production of Bad Wolf, New Line Cinema, BBC One and HBO.
